Twilight Zone Slot Machine and Clock Targets Fix
The Problem
Twilight Zone is one of the coolest, most popular pinball machines of all time. It holds the most patents ever issued for a pinball machine. with the neatest playfield toys and a very deep ruleset. Still, the designers released it with a few mechanical and design flaws. Among others, these are Slot Machine Target and Clock Millions Target. The Slot machine target on Twilight Zone is constantly and repeatedly banged on by pinballs while playing. It is a heavy ball traffic area because the player has to hit the ball into scoop to start the game modes. Due to its close proximity to flippers and under repeated stress and bashing, the target bends backwards (see picture #8 below), exposing the metal slot machine scoop that gets hit instead of the target. The result is, usually, a broken target, broken scoop plastic, scoop weldment gets misaligned and breaks and cracks under pressure. All that can be cured by installing the new, reinforced target assembly. These same instructions can be used to replace the Green Clock Millions Target with the new and reinforced one.
The Solution
There are several techniques available addressing this problem. One is documented here at www.pinballhq.com - the best pinball repair site on the internet. Another one just recently appeared on Ebay for 5-6$ plus shipping. It's basicaly just a bent wire that "supports" the already bent target from behind. I have never used this "fix" and I don't know how well it works. Below is the third and best solution available from Steve Young at Pinball Resource for about 9$. Other reputable pinball parts resellers stock this item such as Bay Area Amusements. We will attempt to describe the procecure of installing this new, reinforced target. It is very strong, built like a tank, with double reinforced bottom and backside. Follow these easy steps:
- Turn the game off. Remove lockdown bar, and playfield glass. Don't forget to take pinballs out of the game.
- Lift the playfield up all the way, resting against the backbox.
- Locate the Scoop target underneath. Remove the small lamp board on the left that's blocking the target somewhat.
- Cut the wires off and take the target out. Please note, which wire goes where or you will short your game.
- Install new target and enjoy playing your game.
