  How to play pinball

Twilight Zone Pinball Refurbishing Process, August 2006, this one is gone out of here

That's a nice playfield now all cleaned up, buffed and polished, yet not fully assembled. We can see in the picture the apron is off the game being cleaned and polished, as well as Battle The Power mini playfield.

The ramp was black from dirt. It needed a full bath. This is one filthy ramp, no doubt.

Same ramp before bath. Notice the overall black dust and ball trails on the ramp. Repeated ball travel over the ramp will spread the dirt, if not cleaned properly and the game will become filthy soon. So, EVERYTHING on the game gets a cleaning treatment, not just the areas the ball comes in contact with. If everything is not cleaned, polished and buffed, the game will become almost as dirty as before very quick. That is why a complete dissasembly of the pinball machine is the only proper way to refurbish it.

Can you see the difference between cleaned and not cleaned board (yes, that's black dust on the lamp board, pretty filthy, huh). It's surprising if these light bulbs could even manage to shine through the playfield at all.

The famous Gumball machine taken out for a spin. Left is cleaned part, right is not.

Top is cleaned ramp, bottom is not yet. Quite a bit of difference there.

Brand new flippers getting ready to be installed. Complete new flipper assemblies getting installed here at TXPinball on every single game sold with new rubbers. Flippers are the most important part of the game.

What difference does it make if the rest of the game looks like a milion bucks if the flippers are sluggish, unresponsive, weak and kick the ball like a wet noodle? Flippers are extensions of your hands and they just HAVE TO operate flawlessly. They have to, or the rest of the game doesn't matter.

Mini playfield getting ready to be refurbished. This cool playfield device will get: cleaned switches, new lightbulbs, new flasher light bulbs, cleaned opto switches, magnets checkup, new star post, polished metal parts, new white rubbers, polished, cleaned and buffed playfield and washed switch covers.

Apron being all cleaned up and pretty. New, shiny, custom made apron playing cards will be added upon reassembly.

New slingshot plastics before installation. They get chipped at the corners on virtually every single game making its way to us.

Added decoration with light bulb covers.

New slot machine plastic being installed. This particular plastic gets broken quite often almost on every single machine we refurbish. On the last 10 Twilight Zones we did, I believe only 1 of them didn't have it broken.

All cleaned up and shiny parts making it back into the game soon.

Gumball machine is sparkling shiny now. It will soon receive brand new shiny custom made small and glossy gumballs added to it as well as TXPinball custom made Gumball machine lighting board soon.

New cherry red, see through transparent flipper buttons installed, as we do to every game here.

Al light bulbs replaced in the back, and there is a lot of those suckers, it almost depleted our reserves. In addition to that, custom #455 bulbs and sockets have been rewired, socketed, soldered and installed for ease of future maintenance.

Pretty painted and clearcoated coin door getting new stainless steel chromed and shiny coin door locks.

All 3 pop bumpers rebuilt from scratch, all of them. The lower bottom one needs a new bumper cap clear plastic added to it.

Pretty, shiny cleaned up shooter lane.

Electronics being checked. Every single lightbulb, every single coil, every single motor, toy, switch and mechanism has to work properly. This process takes a lot of knowledge, patience and time. With games as complex as Twilight Zone that means, a lot of time.

Mini playfield getting all new stuff. It's all prettied up and shiny now as opposed to previous picture of it above.

Translite being cleaned up.

Lights wiring being fixed, diagnosed and checked. Every single one of them works now, every single one.

Now that's a pretty mini playfield now.

Custom circuit board installed illuminating the Gumball machine. Now, that's pretty.

Custom circuit board installed illuminating the Gumball machine, close-up shot.

Slot Machine outside the game, just about to be installed.

Slot Machine installed in the game, made to custom fit over the Slot scoop hole.

Brand new mirror-glazed and polished pinballs about to be installed in the game. The game uses 6 balls (5 normal steel balls and 1 ceramic Powerball).

Shiny, new gumballs about to be installed in the gumball machine.

Testing the ceramic Powerball. This thing flies across the playfield.

To be continued (of course, there is more to refurbishing than what's pictured here...
